I would be lying if I said that Cyber Security has always been an interesting topic for me. That said, I decided to educate myself a little on the subject, being that its Connect Smart Week (22-26 June) and particularly relevant seeing as I work daily in a tech space.
Turns out its not entirely boring. In fact, it has been an eye opener.

Recently Mark Pesce spoke at Digital Disrupt here at GridAKL about 'The Planet Of The Apps'. Generating investment, creating community, products & pitching: an hour with Trent Bigelow
10 June 2015

I like someone that can be both inspiring and humble all in one, and Trent Bigelow is definitely one of those people. In the country for Lightning Lab Auckland, the GridAKL team were lucky enough to snaffle him away from inspiring the LLAKL crew, to inspiring some of our crew here at the GridAKL Hub. We talked about everything from how horrible it feels to know your investment is not going to actually go anywhere, to how B2B is actually a lot ‘sexier’ than you may think. With so much discussed around the GridAKL Hub kitchen table, we chose three topics to share some specific insights on. For more? Follow the guy on twitter.

Inspiration & innovation
10 June 2015

It is not often you search for the answer to something and come up with advice that may actually land you in hot water. Word to the wise, no matter how uninspired you are I highly recommend you do not ‘Watch children playing at the park’ unless they are your own, but I digress. In a world of risk taking startups, bigger corporates leaping into agile or lean processes, and people generally getting out of their comfort zone to pursue innovation; inspiration and how to keep a hold of it can often be a huge focus for businesses. But what does that actually mean?

Choosing to tune out? The role of journalism in todays changing media landscape.

When is the last time you stepped back and seriously questioned your own media consumption and the effect that it has not only on you but on the adults around you? With the changes in technology have come changes in the way that we use media. We no longer need to watch a range of diverse television programmes back to back due to the lack of alternative options. We no longer need to watch advertisements either, which I don’t see a downside to personally…but it has also become clear that when we get to choose easily what we do and don’t want to see, we are consistently leaning towards shallow entertainment based media and sidestepping more in depth educational programming.

Humans are visual creatures, or at least this human is - the folder of images of cute cats on my desktop attests to this. So we here at Lightning Lab had a pretty good time last Monday night.
The GridAKL team were kind enough to squeeze us in between Agile Auckland and NZ Monopoly Championships for a glorious night of Startup and Investor Tinder.

Are you doing innovation wrong? : five tips on how to get innovating
26 May 2015
21 mins to read
They could be accused of clickbaiting, but when a Google Alert comes up with ‘You are doing innovation wrong’ from Forbes it's hard to not click the link, especially in an age in where people seem to be clambering to call themselves innovative [quite often without doing anything to justify such a claim]. Brian Solomon gets it, opening his piece outlining the dynamism of the current innovation scene and pointing out the current antidote to sluggish returns and boring brands is - innovation. The natural question is then, how do we get more innovation? If the answer is simply ‘culture,’ the results can be problematic ...

Our event space is the heart of our external community. It has become a place of collaboration, social interaction, sharing and learning. It is literally booked up almost every single day. As our community coordinator Casey read this blog post aloud to our GridAKL resident community, it was pretty hard to not get a bit teary eyed. This is because, as Casey said - in 1 year the GridAKL Hub has been transformed from a rabbit warren of a space, to a demo zone, to a finished (but empty) collaborative zone, to a thriving group of awesome humans doing great stuff. From our initial somewhat humble beginnings of 4 resident companies in a big space, we are now a 60+ person strong community comprising of 15 resident businesses, 1 startup accelerator and 6500 visitors to our Hub event space in one year ...
