People experience workplace culture through many connected parts of their identity and life experiences. Gender, sexuality, ethnicity, disability, age, faith, caring responsibilities, socioeconomic background, migrant status, and many other factors can shape how people are seen, heard, and supported to progress.
Gender at Work’s research found that many young women and non-binary people in Aotearoa minimise parts of themselves at work. This includes 76% of non-binary respondents, 54% of rainbow respondents, 51% of disabled respondents, and 30% of Māori respondents.
No employee should be made to feel they need to hide who they are, and doing so has significant negative impacts on wellbeing, engagement, and productivity.
An intersectional approach invites workplaces to look more closely at less visible barriers and what it means to create belonging amid shifting demographics and a need for greater social cohesion and unity.
As Aotearoa New Zealand’s workforce becomes richer in diversity, embracing the identities and lived experiences of everyone is crucial.
