Happy New Year 2020 everybody!
After a great first event last year, we are ready to kick off things with something pretty special – Maps!
Last November, #30DayMapChallenge took off on Twitter – a challenge to create a different map every day of the month and share it on social media.
It was started by Topi Tjukanov, https://twitter.com/tjukanov/status/1187713840550744066?s=20
He has reflected on it recently in the following blog post –
https://www.gispo.fi/en/blog/the-power-of-community-30daymapchallenge/
David Friggens, from Wellington, created a gallery of most of the maps shared using the hashtag. Feel free to delight yourself beforehand – https://david.frigge.nz/30DayMapChallenge/maps.html
The beauty of the challenge as Topi points out is the power of community.
New Zealand was actually very strongly represented (Ranked 6th in terms of submissions). Our second meetup taps into the local geospatial community.
We have three awesome speakers who took on the challenge, and it was truly a challenge. We are stoked to have them talk about their learnings and process.
More details on speakers below –
Aaron Schiff is a freelance consulting economist and data scientist.
Emma Vitz is an actuary and data scientist with a particular interest in geospatial analysis, climate change and natural disasters. She loves making maps and finding ways to communicate her findings to wider audience
Andrew Tyrrell is a GIS Specialist for an environmental planning consultancy in Auckland. His passion for maps spills into his non-professional life too, and he shares his cartographic tinkerings under the name South Arrow Maps.
