Bringing together a narrative across multiple platforms, transmedia seeks to tantalise, engage and enthral the user. Transmedia turns the storytelling journey into one of discovery, not passive acceptance.
The result is the convergence of game developers, copywriters, film makers and screen play writers into the creation and deployment of a story. If it sounds exciting, that’s because it is, and there is a plethora of work circulating to prove it. The case study that many call on is the award winning Coca Cola campaign – Happiness Factor. The campaign carried through add spots, interactive gaming and apps. Jonathan Mildenhall, vice president of global advertising strategy at Coca-Cola described the impact of transmedia into this campaigns creation in an interview with Forbes
“It was an ad, and only as good as the media dollars that we put behind it…But transmedia helped us understand how the story arc and the narrative of the Happiness Factory could evolve over time and how it could be used through different channels.”
This Thursday, The NZ Film Commission, Film Auckland, The NZ Game Developers Association and Colab at AUT University are bringing together the local community of screen producers, story tellers and game developers to hear from two transmedia gurus.
David S. Rosenbaum, former VP of licensing with Paramount Pictures and entertainment lawyer will be joined by Dave Brevik, CEO of Gazillion Games, holder of the Marvel Universal gaming rights. Both will talk about viewing and managing their interactive licenses and transmedia productions.
